‘Sun Children’ to appear at Tallinn Black Nights filmfest

Majid Majidi’s latest film ‘Sun Children’ is to appear at the competition lineup of the 24th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (POFF) in Estonia.

‘Sun Children’ aka ‘The Sun’, which recently won the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the 77th Venice Film Festival in Italy, will be screening at the POFF, one of the biggest film festivals in Northern Europe.

‘Sun Children’ centers on 12-year-old Ali and his three friends. They work hard to survive and to financially support their families. They sometimes commit petty crimes to make easy money. Everything changes, however, when Ali is entrusted to find a hidden treasure underground but must first attends the Sun School, a charitable institution that tries to educate street kids and child laborers.

The protagonists of the movie were themselves, former child laborers. The movie also stars well-known Iranian actors Ali Nasirian, Javad Ezzati and Tannaz Tabatabaee.

‘Sun Children’ will be the opening film of the 34th Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF), an Oscars-qualifying film festival in the United Kingdom, to be held on November 4. It is also currently on screen at the 44th edition of the Sao Paulo Film Festival (SPFF) in Brazil as well as the 8th Bosphorus Film Festival in Turkey.

Earlier this year, ‘Sun Children’ won the best film and best screenplay awards at the 38th edition of the Fajr Film Festival in Tehran.

‘When the Moon was Full’ by Narges Abyar was the winner of the audience award at the previous edition of the POFF.  

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival hosts filmmakers and also journalists from around the world. The festival screens around 250 features and more than 300 shorts and animations each year.

The 24th edition of POFF will be held both in online and physical mode on November 13-29, 2020.
